A HEAT recovery system has won Yorkshire supermarket chain Morrisons a national environmental award.
The Heat Harvester system has been pioneered at Morrisons store in Stockton, Teesside, combining the use of carbon dioxide as a refrigerant with a system which recovers heat from the site's refrigeration units and uses it to supply hot water to the rest of the store, cutting energy consumption.
This means it is one of the most carbon efficient cooling systems in a British supermarket.
Bradford-based Morrisons – which earlier this year became the only food retailer to be awarded the Carbon Trust Standard for its carbon-cutting measures – was singled out for praise, picking up the Green End-User of the Year title at the Cooling Industry Awards.
Roger Owen, group property director and chairman of Morrisons' environmental steering group, said: "This award further confirms the significant progress we are making towards cutting our carbon footprint by 36 per cent by 2010."
