THE gap between men's pay and women's pay has increased slightly to 17.1 per cent, according to the Government's annual survey of hours and earnings.
The 0.1 per cent increase is in the gap between the wages of men and women in full-time employment. For part-time workers the gap is more – 36.6 per cent.

The Trades Union Congress has condemned the wage difference as unfair.

TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber said: "This is an injustice for both women and men. As redundancies mount, more women may find themselves as the sole or main income earner. It's more important than ever that they are not underpaid."

The pay gap in the public sector is 13.8 per cent. The pay gap is even wider in the private sector at 21.7 per cent, said Mr Barber.
