PLANS are being drawn up for a new £5m health centre in north Leeds that will serve 8,500 patients.
A planning application has been submitted to Leeds City Council for a new medical centre on the site of the Wise Owl public house at the corner of Otley Old Road and Iveson Approach in Tinshill.
Developer Assura Group wants to build the centre to replace the existing Tinshill Lane Surgery. Assura is negotiating to buy the site from Marstons Brewery.
Christine Gaughran, managing partner of the Tinshill Lane Surgery which is in old converted residential buildings, said: "Our existing premises are totally inadequate and unsuitable for the delivery of modern health care services.
"They are unsuited for disabled access and we expect our patient list to increase with the planned new housing in this area and without a new larger building we would be unable to cope.
"The doctors and staff have worked hard over the years to provide a high level of services for our patients. We now feel that this tradition can only be upheld in purpose-built accommodation."
Andrew Darke, Assura Properties managing director, said: "We are proposing the redevelopment of the Wise Owl pub because the site is the right size and the best location in the vicinity.
"We would provide a building that would have much needed space for the practice now and in the future and for other primary care services if needed. Also there would be a large increase in car parking."
The proposal is for a two storey building which would include more than 60 car parking spaces.
