This gallery features a number of local landmarks ranging from the Regal cinema and York Road public swimming baths and the public library through to the factory of ‘The Tailor of Taste’ and well known places of worship. Familiar streets such as Stoney Rock Lane and Nippet Lane are also in focus as well as a Royal visit. The images are published courtesy of photographic archive Leodis, which is run by Leeds Library & Information Service. They also run heritage blog The Secret Library Leeds, which provides a behind the scenes look at the Central Library and highlights from its special collections, including rare books hidden away in the stacks. 1. Burmantofts in the 1930s
Three girls pose for the camera on Stoney Rock Lane in June 1939. From the left, the first street to intersect with Stoney Rock Lane is Back Fraser Terrace, then moving right, numbers 78/80 shop run by Leonard Smith grocers and off-licence. This shop has blinds down and John Smiths 'Magnet' ales sign. Next street is Fraser Terrace. Number 76A is Frederick Green Hairdresser, a barbers striped pole is projecting from the shop. Number 76 is the home of Michael Rogan a bus cleaner. This junction is with Back Fraser Street. Number 74 is Mrs Clara Fraser sweet shop, the name 'Nixon' is above the shop window. St. Agnes Church on Stoney Rock Lane in June 1939. The street to the left of the church is Rock Square, to the right Spink Road. The church was built in 1889, it cost £5,000. In Gothic style it was designed by architects Kelly and Birchall of Leeds. The reredos was given by the Burmantofts Pottery works. It was of Terra-cotta facience, for which the company was renowned.
