Market matters in the spotlight

RE: 'Market must keep its character" by Michael Meadowcroft (Letters, August 23).
Really, Michael, you appear to have a lapse of memory. My husband Peter Kersting led the rearguard action along with the Kirkgate traders (wonderful people) – such as Michael and Alex Harwin, Stephen Attack (inside market), and Harry Higgins (outside market). It was only later in the campaign that my husband persuaded the Liberals to join in.
A huge march was organised from the market to the Civic Hall led by Peter and the late Ronnie Hilton (singer) and the Rev Monsignor Buckley. At the Civic Hall Peter was presented with a scroll by the traders which made him an honorary life member of the Kirkgate Market Traders Association in appreciation of his support.
Peter and the traders were grateful to the Liberals for their backing, including Coun Stephen Cooksey, in their stance against MAB.
Peter shares your concern about the character of the market, which must not be destroyed with any major alterations.
PATRICIA M KERSTING, Fulneck, Pudsey
