Missing the point about McDonald's
I WAS interested to read the article 'People's choice leaves bad taste', (YEP, May 6), by the columnist Debbie Leigh commenting on a recent survey on Leeds's best restaurants.
Sadly the piece was rather short-sighted in its opinion of McDonald's and the views of the good people of Leeds, who no doubt make up a large percentage of the people that actually buy the Yorkshire Evening Post on a regular basis.
I own and operate 23 McDonald's restaurants across West and North Yorkshire, with nine specifically located in Leeds.
McDonald's is a restaurant where our customers can enjoy a good quality burger made from 100 per cent British or Irish beef, chicken sandwich made from white breast meat chicken and on our breakfast menu free-range eggs, British back bacon and refreshing drinks including organic milk or our Rainforest Alliance coffee and tea. Additionally a large proportion of our menu is supplied by over 17,000 British farmers, a fact we are very proud of. How many other restaurants in West Yorkshire can make similar claims about its suppliers, or indeed, be seen to be supporting our British farmers on this scale?
Ms Leigh is missing the point about McDonald's and its customers. We have never claimed to be anything other than a good burger restaurant. The restaurants mentioned in her article offer a varied choice of food and prices to the people of Leeds. It's about choice, there's a place for us all in such a competitive market place.
Ms Leigh needs only to refer to renowned restaurant critic Michael Winner's comments about McDonald's in a recent television programme. He regularly eats gourmet food, yet he enjoyed his meal and could appreciate McDonald's for what it stands for – good quality food at a price that most of the population can afford.
Our customers visit us on average three times a month and most of them thoroughly enjoy their experience.
Maybe next time Ms Leigh is leaving Harvey Nichols she should turn right and head a few doors up to the McDonald's at the top of Briggate. I'll welcome her and offer her a choice from our varied menu so she can find out for herself why we have been voted Leeds's fourth best restaurant.
