Students and teachers across West Yorkshire were celebrating some remarkable GCSE results today.
Among them was Allerton High in Moortown, Leeds, where pupils set a record of 68 per cent of pupils gaining five or more A* to C grades – up three per cent on last year.

"We are delighted that our youngsters have achieved so well – our best exam r
esults," said head teacher Elaine Silson.

"Our fantastic students have shown that they are dedicated to achieving their academic potential and their hard work has paid off."

Outstanding students included Davinder Cheema with 10 A*s and two A grades, Ananya Namdeo with 10 A*s and one A grade and Lana Myers with nine A*s and three As.

At the David Young Community Academy in Seacroft, which opened two years ago to replace two struggling schools, 70 per cent of students achieved five or more top grades.

Principal Ros McMullen said: "These results are magnificent and are reward for a huge amount of hard work by students, their families and my wonderful staff.

"I am delighted that the community in and around Seacroft now has a school it can be justifiably proud of, that they can send their children to with confidence and that has the capability to contribute significantly to the regeneration of this area."

Lawnswood School also posted a record year, with a 59 per cent pass rate – up 21 per cent on last year.

At Horsforth School, 81 per cent of pupils gained five or more top grades, making it one of the highest-performing schools in Leeds. A dozen pupils at the school gained nine GCSEs each with grades of either A or A*.

"I am very proud of the outstanding achievements," said head teacher Steve Jex. "The students who have worked so hard to gain these excellent results and have been supported throughout by a first class team of dedicated staff to ensure success."

The top results in the city was once again expected to be at Leeds Girls' High and Leeds Grammar – which merge next month to become The Grammar School at Leeds.

The combined pass rate for both schools was 98.3 per cent, with more than two thirds of grades at A* or A.
