We can win the World Cup! That's the defiant message from Leeds Rhinos hero Jamie Jones-Buchanan today as he prepares to jet to Australia with England.
The 27-year-old forward is one of eight members of Rhinos' Grand Final winning squad included in the England party which flies Down Under on Monday.

And he insisted today that coach Tony Smith's side – who kick off against Papua New Guinea in Townsville in 14 days' time – aren't going all that way to be second-best.

"We can win it," said Jones-Buchanan. "The lads believe it and I believe it as well.

"I will go out there and do whatever I can.

"I worked with Tony for four years when he was at Leeds and I know what he expects and I've got an idea of what he wants to do, so I have got a little bit of a head start in that respect, assuming that I get a game.

"I don't know what his plans are, but if I carry the water I'll be happy and I'll do that to the best of my ability.

"We definitely believe and we aren't going over there to make the numbers up."

England selection caps a rollercoaster year for Jones-Buchanan, who played a key role in Rhinos' World Club Challenge victory over Melbourne Storm, but then missed much of the season due to shoulder and hamstring injuries before returning in time for Leeds' triumphant play-off campaign.

"If you had asked me a few weeks ago, I wouldn't have thought there'd have been a possibility of being in the England squad," he admitted.
"A few games later and it's there. It's the cherry on the cake, after winning the Grand Final trophy again.

"It is fantastic times and you wonder, you think things can't get any better. Hopefully we can bring the World Cup back as well. That'd be mind-blowing."

Smith has gone for pace and athleticism in his squad, rather than raw power.

According to Jones-Buchanan: "It is a very good squad. Tony wants to play fast and I think the Leeds and St Helens players – who are the majority – like to play that way.

"If you look at the players he has picked out from other clubs, they are quick and strong as well.

"That is what you've got to be like if you are going to beat the Aussies.

"You've got to be skilful and you've got to be quick and you've got to attack them fast.

"You have got to be fit enough to weather them as well."

The Leeds contingent – which also includes Lee Smith, Keith Senior, Danny McGuire, Rob Burrow, Jamie Peacock, Gareth Ellis and Kevin Sinfield – are full of confidence after the shock Old Trafford defeat of red-hot favourites St Helens a week ago.

Jones-Buchanan feels having so many players in the squad from the double-champions can only be a good thing.

"It will be nice to have a few familiar faces out there," he said.

"A lot of them are experienced. I was in the GB camp last year, but I haven't been away for six weeks before. It's a long time to be away from your family and it's good to have some familiar people around you.

"I am looking forward to it. You can learn from other lads from other teams as well and see what they're doing. It's going to be a good experience."
