CARL Shutt enjoyed a dream Leeds United debut on this day in 1989.

Recently appointed Whites boss Howard Wilkinson signed Shutt from Bristol City for £50,000 in the Spring of '89 and the forward's debut came in the home clash against Bournemouth with nine games left of the 88-89 Division Two campaign.

Leeds lined up against the Cherries following a 2-0 loss at Blackburn Rovers but Shutt netted a hat-trick in his very first game, bagging all three goals in a 3-0 victory in front of 21.095 fans at Elland Road.

Shutt's first strike came from a Gordon Strachan free-kick which was flicked on by Ian Baird into the direction of the new Whites forward.

Shutt then controlled the ball with his chest and smashed home a fierce finish from the middle of the box.

The forward's quick reactions also led to his second goal as Bournemouth were unable to clear a high looping ball into the box.

From a tight angle, Shutt pounced and sent a half volley into the bottom left corner to double his tally.

And more hesitant Cherries defending led to Shutt completing an incredible treble as the forward raced on to a bouncing loose ball following a cross from the left.

Bournemouth were unable to clear amidst an almighty scramble with bodies on the deck but Shutt needed no second invitation to pounce and smash home another volley to mark a dream Whites debut.
